Welcome to France! ACES OF VALOR is a solitaire game where you command a fighter squadron on the Western Front during World War I through a campaign of multiple missions to score as many victory points as possible to assist the war effort. You can play as the Germans, or one the Entente powers (British, French, or Americans). Each aircraft counter represents the pilot and the aircraft combined, and your squadron will have up to eight at any given time.

The player chooses the campaign’s duration (8, 12 or 16 missions), and draws a card to determine the objective of each mission, which includes patrols, trench strafing, photo recon, artillery spotting, balloon busting, and bomber escort. The player’s flight moves across a gridded map that is a semi-historical representation of the Western front. Anti-aircraft fire is heaviest near the trenches but can happen anywhere over enemy territory. When combat occurs, aircraft are moved to an “Initiative Track” for up to three rounds of combat, where pilot skill, aircraft performance, and luck all come into play to determine the outcome.

The player earns mission points by destroying enemy aircraft and ground targets, and also by escorting bomber and 2-seater aircraft on successful bombing, photo reconnaissance and artillery support missions. When the flight lands, mission points are converted to victory points or used to repair and replace aircraft as well as upgrade aircraft to newer, better models. The goal is to earn enough victory points to achieve a minor, major or strategic victory.

    Game play/components

Great fun game. Tense times over enemy territory and flak. Random events add excitement, and the game has good replayability. Well worth it.

Plays well, not a whole lot of set-up and average space required.

If you like WWI air war, good game to get.

    You are in command!

A must have for WWI airplanes enthusiast. Your in command of a squadron, not in the cockpit of one plane. Very thematic, very fluid, simple to learn and a lot of fun. Excellent solo system with dice and modern charts for random decisions. Components are very nice quality. Highly recommended!

    Excellent Entertainment

A really easy to learn and playable game about WW1 aerial combat. Easy to follow player aid cards. The map includes a sequence of play chart, VP, MP & Missions tracks. A campaign Map with Operations Chart & current squadron status. I have played three eight missions and not done that well, mainly as I chose the combat option each time to learn the mechanics of the game, rather than taking the avoid option. I will now add in the optional rules and am chomping at the very bit for more enjoyable game play.

This is a well-thought out and professional game that deserves the good press it has received. Easy to learn, beautiful components and subtle strategy make it a hit. This is my first Legion game and I am now a fan. I am eager to play more of their games.

I am a Solitaire Player Now!

Started playing solitaire games past year or so. Have to say I have purchased and played some good and some bad. This is the best so far. Great game! Rules are laid out well and not overly complicated. Fun to play. Highly recommend this game. Will be watching for other games to come out in Legion's line. First game I bought from Legion Wargames. Will be buying more.

    Interesting Challenges

Posted by CJ Wallington on Mar 11th 2023

I like the period, I like the challenge of managing multiple planes rather than just one pilot, I like the randomness of the missions and events along the way. After one (failed miserably) play through I'm willing to do it again. This has found a place on my shelves of "games to keep". The good: - nice concept - good components (good diecut so no "dog ears", nice thickness to the cards, well laid out map, nice plane art) - rules well written/edited The "not as good": - could use greater differentiation in the allied background schemes (if you don't know a French from British from US rondel, you're kinda screwed. Yeah, the font is different colors but different backgrounds would make is waaaaay easier) - relatively barebones map art - charts not well laid out - could use more detail in the sequence of play on the map - lack of an FAQ/Errata on the Legion Wargames page

    The Birth of Aerial Combat

Posted by James on Mar 10th 2023

Have you ever wanted to command a squadron of aircraft during the Great War? Now is the time! With each mission you draw, you are responsible for choosing the men to fly it. Your leadership will be the key to complete the mission. Will you all raise a glass of ale in celebration of the mission success or in remembrance of those lost this day. This game allows you to feel what it must have been like to order those young men into the air, time and again. If you enjoy aerial combat, don't miss this chance to get a great game. Take a few minutes to study the rulebook, and off you go. The player aid charts and tables help to guide you through the process from takeoff to landing. The card driven missions helps to avoid the time it would take to go through a list of targets. I played Avalon Hill's Richtofen's War and Aces of Valor is a game that I really enjoy.
