Target For Today
Bombers Over the Reich, 1942 - 1945
Designer: Steve Dixon & Bob Best

TARGET FOR TODAY is a solitaire game that recreates American's Daylight Strategic Bombing Campaign against Nazi Occupied Europe during the Second World War. Considerable research, including review of many oral histories gathered from veterans who flew heavy bombers in the Daylight Strategic Bombing Campaign was done to make Target For Today! function as closely as possible to reality. The game was designed to provide YOU, the player with the ultimate gaming experience depicting the same types of events and decision making processes experienced by our veterans who flew the real-life missions.

Now, YOU are in command of an individual bomber on an individual mission over Hitler's Third Reich -flying either the B-17F or G Model Flying Fortress or the B24D, or J Model Liberator bomber. A series of individual missions are strung together in the campaign game to form the player's tour of duty. Just as it was in real life, the objective of the game for the player is to survive your tour of duty so you can rotate home.

The US Army Air Forces suffered one of the highest casualty rates of any branch of the military services including the US Marine Corps during World War II. The heavy bomber groups of the 8th Air Force flew a combined total of 10,631 strike missions over Europe during the period of this game. The 8th Air Force lost 4145 bombers on these missions. Surviving your tour of duty could be difficult!

TARGET FOR TODAY is an advanced update of Glen Frank's classic game B17, QUEEN OF THE SKIES. Some familiarity with that game is assumed, but "TARGET FOR TODAY" is a completely new game -you do not need to own B-17, QUEEN OF THE SKIES to play it. New tables are included and the rules are organized according to the sequence of play in any typical mission. TARGET FOR TODAY is designed so that each individual mission is fast and easy to play. The campaign game that comprises your tour of duty offers the player a game that is rich in detail, making the game as realistic as possible while still remaining playable.

    Fuddy Duddy's First Raid

Posted by Cougbeav on May 5th 2020

Wow, this game is so well done. I have only played my first game but I am hooked. The Fuddy Duddy took off on that cold English morning with very little resistance to the target zone, dropped it's payload and turned to head home, it's rookie crew excited and thinking what a turkey shoot. THEN things got grim. Wow, the Germans really did not like having their factories bombed and after wave after wave, the fuddy duddy had to limp down to 10,000 ft and then a lucky German hit knocked out all the electrical. Finally, the crew had to bail out. The game is well designed and the components are good quality. I appreciate how well written the rules are. My only complaint is that I would like to have Legion put links to their combat log sheets so I can print them at home or for Legion to offer several pads with these logs pre-printed that we can purchase.

Masters of the Air (The Game)

Quite the game about the 8th and 15th AAF and it is a fun and easy game to get into and it plays quickly! Charts and flavor adds a ton of detail to each flight and to have 5 different models of bombers just adds to the replayability. You can tell that the creators put tons of effort and research into putting this together and it is much appreciated to not go insane with the amount of detail! Props to you guys! For real. Components to the game are in good quality, some counters have small dents where it was attached to the counter board, but it's not bad at all. Mounted board is great, the other sheets and it great condition and it feels like it can take years worth of playing. Rules are super easy to follow. Overall this game really does take you 30,000 feet in the air, you feel the adrenaline when the nightmare fighters attack, the heat and pressure of the flak, the intensity of the bomb run and the relief of landing. It really tells an epic story.

Fire and Flak, Life and Death

I've never been much of a player of solitaire board games. I've really only played one other at length... Mosby's Raiders. But after stumbling onto the Legion Wargames website and finding "Target for Today" among the listings I had to give it a chance. The theme of the game was just too tempting. Now, after a week or so of struggling to find time to play, I find myself daydreaming about my next die rolls. The game -- or simulation, I would call it, due to the meaty and delicious details of gameplay -- is a fantastic recreation of the 8th and 15th air forces and their experiences over Occupied Europe during WWII. I am amazed by the attention to detail... the charts and the counters and the realistic outcomes of each flight. The only thing missing is the extreme terror of combat, and I think I can live without that feature. Occasionally, I find myself thinking that it is too easy at times to kill the enemy fighters. But just as that thought enters my mind an FW 190 bears down from 3 O'clock high, shutting down an engine and setting fire to another as he destroys an aileron and seriously wounds my navigator. (sigh) It is amazing how quickly you get attached to a bomber and its crew (I name them) and it's equally amazing how quickly a mission that is going off without a hitch turns deadly, and in your mind you watch your bomber spiral into the farmland in Belgium, grateful that six of your crewmen managed to bail out. This review is over. The jeep is waiting to take me and my crew to our B17G. We're gonna hit the marshalling yards in Bremen. God be with us.

    Impressive Drama

Posted by MH on Jan 15th 2018

As you’ve already read, this is the spiritual descendent of B17 Queen of the Skies. The best way to summarize the difference is to recall that B17 was a game, whereas Target for the Day is a simulation. As a simulation you honestly don’t usually have big decisions to make - when/where/how to fire is pretty much a forgone conclusion. But when you do face a decision that isn’t self evident it can become pretty dramatic. And dramatic is the word to describe this “game.” You’ll roll on lots and lots of charts in an almost flow chart manner to follow your crew and plane through a mission. The detail of what happens to hit locations and results are impressive. You will find yourself dreading a dr as you realize that veteran crew member finds himself in a hot spot from a ME 109 attack. This isn’t a game you play to win but rather to keep playing. Name your crew, (I even downloaded actual vintage WW2 airman portraits for color) keep their stats and over many games you will have a emergent story. When the plane you had ridden to so many bomb runs finally sub-comes to a flak attack because you had to drop out of formation and you watch all your crew die with the lone exception the one who luckily was able to bail out only to be captured, you fully realize the fate of too many that gave their life for the strategic air war. I give Target for the Day a hearty endorsement.

    Not to bad at all

Posted by Draxon on Nov 27th 2017

Once you read through the rules and then skim them, the game-play is fairly straightforward, jump from table to table, get the story of your bomber going. It is quite fun and great way to pass a lazy afternoon. Downsides for me is the 'flipping backward and forward' between 2 books looking for tables. Its ok, but the flipping around and such really slows down and bogs the game-play. Setting up Bookmarks and such for the mission before playing highly recommended. The other thing, all the counters and game map and planes are nicely detailed and coloured, easy to recognise and see what you are looking at. I kinda just wish the rule books and such had some colour in them instead of just black and white, just to give it a little more life. Great game though, Highly recommend getting a copy. Nice job, thanks for putting the time in to make such a game for us all to enjoy. really appreciate it. :)

    Excellent Game

So, if you are looking for an updated B-17 Queen of the Skies, this is it. The quality of the game is top notch, from the counters (including the counter punch) to the box. The game plays well, and there is a ton of detail. Lots more detail than QotS, Overall, if you liked QotS, you will like TFTD. I do have a couple of small constructive criticisms; 1) Gunners are far too accurate (This is apparently getting fixed) 2) You will WANT to write down a quick sequence of events per turn. It will save you a lot of flipping around. 3) Game Flow: This is my biggest complaint/suggestion. There is a LOT of flipping back and forth in the two main manuals. It would be a lot easier if the main turn by turn tables were in the same place and in sequence order. Overall, an absolutely fantastic game. My quibbles are minor and easily fixed. If your looking for a great solo game, this is it!

A very detailed game that gives a very exciting mission (or set of missions) over German-occupied Europe. The tables are very detailed and allow an enjoyable experience. Recommended.
