A Splendid Little War
I've recently bought this (along with 3 other games still to be tabled) from Legion in a moment of curiousity. One of the things I love about wargames is how they direct you to learn more about history as well as offering an opportunity to consider the complexity of any given situation. ASLW does all these things. The situation is interesting and is not immediately obvious about what is the best strategy. The terrain throws up difficult questions and there is a sense of urgency for the US to act before the poor weather arrives. Once the weather changes, you risk yellow fever which delibitates the army. The weather also slows movement which frustrates manoeuvre. The thing is, a reckless assault early on against reinforced Spanish positions can be costly. I played this three times in a row and still haven't settled on the best strategy. Thanks Legion for a great game.
